HOKULOA United Church of Christ(Congregational)
(Big Island of Hawaii)

Erected through the inspiration of Christian faith instilled in Hawaiians by Rev. Lorenzo Lyons(1807-1866),an American Congregational missionary who came to this island in 1832, the church structure now stands as a tribute to his labors which began in the village of Puako about 1835.
After taking two years to build, the building was dedicated on March 21, 1860. The building served as a house of worship until the termination of the Puako sugar plantation in 1914. Following that date, the landmark fell into disrepair and near ruin until a major restoration was undertaken in 1966. Since that time a number of groups have made use of the church building.
The new congregation now being formed will take the name of the "Hokuloa" Church. A search has been undertaken to find a location for constructing a larger facility. The historic building will be maintained and continue to be used by the new congregation for chapel services and other activities.
